Pavement patching on Interstate 70 expected in November and December
Initial work is beginning on Revive I-70, an Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) project to improve I-70 in Wayne County. Starting on or after Monday, Oct. 28, drivers will see active crews performing soil borings and pavement coring in preparation for construction activities on the interstate. This work is for Contract 1 of Revive I-70, which focuses on the eastern portion of the project area, from west of US 35 to the Ohio state line.
Improvements to this stretch of I-70 include an added travel lane in each direction, pavement replacement, modifications to the US 35 and US 40 interchanges, and bridge improvements. Construction is expected to begin in earnest in early 2025.
What to Expect
Closures are expected on or after the following dates:
- Monday, Oct. 28 – Friday, Nov. 8: Daytime shoulder closures throughout the 8-mile corridor
- Monday, Nov. 11 – Thursday, Nov. 14: Overnight shoulder closures and single-lane restrictions
The work zone extends from west of US 35 to the Ohio state line. Overnight lane restrictions will move as operations progress and will only affect limited areas at a time. Drivers should watch for signage as work advances to multiple locations along the interstate.
Still Ahead: Significant Pavement Patching
Asphalt pavement patching is expected to begin in November on a separate portion of I-70 in Wayne County. The 3.5-mile corridor extends from west of Centerville to US 35. Two weeks of single-lane restrictions are planned on westbound I-70 in November and two weeks of single-lane restrictions will follow in December on eastbound I-70 to accommodate the work.
Work is expected to happen on or after the following dates:
- Friday, Nov. 8 — Friday, Nov. 15: Left lane of westbound I-70 expected to be closed
- Friday, Nov. 15 – Friday, Nov. 22: Right lane of westbound I-70 expected to be closed
- Friday, Dec. 6 – Friday, Dec. 13: Left lane of eastbound I-70 expected to be closed
- Friday, Dec. 13 – Friday, Dec. 20: Right lane of eastbound I-70 expected to be closed
Lane closures are scheduled to begin around 9 p.m. each Friday and end by noon the following Friday. No work is scheduled the week of Nov. 25 with all lanes open to help prevent delays for Thanksgiving travelers. Pavement patching is expected to be complete by Friday, Dec. 20, with all lanes back open to traffic.
Significant delays are anticipated during while work is in progress, and drivers are reminded to plan ahead and avoid distractions in the work zone. The lane restrictions will allow the work to be completed faster, preventing prolonged work and extended delays. The patching work is outside of the first planned improvements for Revive I-70 (Contract 1), but the work is being done now because of the condition of the pavement.
Anticipated schedules are subject to change based on weather and other factors.
