New traffic configuration on I-70 in western portion of project

Temporary U.S. 27 ramp closures expected next month

Drivers on eastbound I-70 will soon notice a new traffic pattern from west of S.R. 1 to west of Centerville Road. Traffic is expected to shift to a new configuration early this week. One lane of eastbound traffic will shift and use the westbound roadway. It will be signed as an express lane. Drivers should remain in the right lane for access to all interchanges. Truck traffic should also remain in the right lane on eastbound I-70.

Crews are working on the eastbound lanes of I-70 this year. Westbound traffic is moving to the outside to accommodate one lane of eastbound traffic on the westbound roadway. The lane using the eastbound roadway is expected to shift closer to the inside shoulder later next week.

The traffic shifts will allow crews the room they need to safely work and continue improvements in the area. They also make it possible to maintain two lanes of traffic in each direction during peak hours.

Drivers should slow down and watch signage in the area as they adjust to the change. Traffic will be in this new configuration for the next several months when traffic will shift again to allow eastbound work to be completed this year. Pavement is being rehabilitated and improvements are being made to several bridges.

Overnight Restrictions This Week

Overnight lane restrictions are scheduled this week as progress continues on the I-70 corridor. Drivers can expect the following restrictions:

Monday, March 30

  • Eastbound I-70 reduced to one lane from Reservoir Road to Access Road

Thursday, April 2

  • Eastbound I-70 reduced to one lane at Washington Road

Thursday, April 2 and Friday, April 3

  • Eastbound I-70 reduced to one lane from Reservoir Road to Access Road
  • Rolling slowdowns on I-70 from U.S. 35 to Access Road (10 p.m. to 5 a.m.)

Closures are scheduled from 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. each weeknight. The Friday closure is 10 p.m. to 10 a.m. Saturday.

Ramp Closures

Two temporary ramp closures are expected to begin next month. The ramps to and from U.S. 27 and eastbound I-70 are scheduled to close on or after Wednesday, April 15.

The exit ramp from eastbound I-70 to U.S. 27 is expected to reopen in mid-June. The entrance ramp from U.S. 27 to eastbound I-70 is expected to reopen in mid-August.

Crews are rehabilitating the ramps. Concrete patching is planned for the ramps and U.S. 27, and crews will be doing extensive work to connect the ramps to mainline I-70. This includes work on the acceleration and deceleration lanes. More information, including a signed detour, will be shared closer to date.

Construction Speed Limit

The construction zone speed limit remains active on I-70. A reduced speed of 55 mph is in place for the duration of Revive I-70 work. It is important for drivers to slow down and avoid distractions in work zones.
