Construction started this spring, and a lot of progress has been made!
It’s easy for drivers to see the progress as a third travel lane is added in each direction from west of U.S. 35 to the Ohio state line. Improvements are being made to 21 bridges, including complete replacements, deck overlays and painting. Bridges are also being widened to accommodate the additional travel lane.
There was a lot of work to do before construction could start including shoulder strengthening, earth exploration, soil boring, utility work, and removal of existing overhead signage.
“It’s so exciting to see the progress being made along I-70 over the past several months. The work being done will make the public’s commute safer and more efficient.” – Fielding Tipton, INDOT Construction Project Manager

U.S. 40 Interchange
The ramp from westbound I-70 to westbound U.S. 40 reopened in September after closing in late July to begin reconstructing the U.S. 40 interchange. Drivers are now on new pavement.
Later this month, temporary closures are scheduled for the ramps from eastbound and westbound U.S. 40 to eastbound I-70 and eastbound I-70 to eastbound U.S. 40 to accommodate additional work at the interchange.
Significant improvements are planned at the U.S. 40 and U.S. 35 interchanges. The existing partial cloverleafs are being replaced with diamond interchanges with single-lane roundabouts. The existing loop ramps will also be removed. Barriers in the median will be placed to reduce or eliminate crossover crashes. The reconstructed interchanges are expected to open to traffic in 2027.

Preconstruction activities are underway in the western portion of the project area, from west of State Road 1 to west of Centerville. Crews are strengthening the shoulder and adding new asphalt to accommodate traffic during construction.
Pavement rehabilitation and bridge improvements are coming soon to the nearly nine-mile corridor. Bridge improvements are expected for 13 bridges, including bridge deck rehabilitations, deck replacements, deck overlays, and painting.
Weekend Lane Restrictions in October
Weekend lane restrictions are scheduled in October to widen eastbound I-70 from west of S.R. 1 to west of Centerville to prepare for the start of construction early next year.

Significant back-ups and delays are expected. Drivers are strongly encouraged to plan ahead and use alternate routes when possible.
Closures are expected at least four weekends to complete the work. Crews will work east to west and reduce eastbound I-70 to a single lane in approximately two-to-three-mile sections. Restrictions will be in place from 10 p.m. on Fridays through 7 a.m. on Mondays.
Washington Road Long-Term Closure
Washington Road is expected to close at I-70 in early November and remain closed through April 2026. Updates will be provided closer to date.

I-70 is expected to remain open to traffic during construction, with two lanes open in each direction most of the time. Short-term closures will occur as necessary. Access for all residences and businesses will be maintained.

Cardinal Greenway Trail Closure
The Cardinal Greenway Trail is expected to reopen this fall. A box culvert replaces the former bridge. Pedestrians will walk through the box culvert and under I-70.
Construction Speed Limit
The construction zone speed limit remains active on I-70. A reduced speed of 55 mph is in place for the duration of Revive I-70 work. It is important for drivers to slow down and avoid distractions in work zones.
