Shoulder strengthening work is scheduled to begin on the Revive I-70 corridor in Wayne County late this month. A single lane restriction on eastbound I-70 is expected Friday, Feb. 28 through Monday, March 3. The right lane of eastbound I-70 will close from Round Barn Road to just east of State Road 227. The closure is expected to begin around 9 p.m. Friday and end by 7 a.m. Monday.
The weekend lane restriction will allow crews to work continuously with milling operations at night and paving operations during the day with warmer temperatures.
Crews will mill the existing shoulder and add new asphalt to strengthen the shoulder to accommodate traffic during construction. Traffic will utilize part of the outside shoulder to maintain two lanes of traffic for most of construction and give crews the room needed to build new lanes of I-70. The additional travel lanes will be built using the existing inside shoulder.
The outside shoulder will be strengthened from west of U.S. 35 to the Ohio state line. The work from Round Barn Road to just east of S.R. 227 is expected to last about three weeks. Work will then shift to between S.R. 227 and the Ohio state line and should be complete by mid-April.
In addition to the weekend closure late this month, drivers should expect the following:
- The remainder of work will be completed during the overnight hours.
- Short-term single lane restrictions will move with the location of work.
- Short-term ramp closures will be needed.
Additional information will be provided at a later date. Watch this short video for more information about the work.
Construction Speed Limit to Begin
The construction zone speed limit will begin when shoulder strengthening work begins late this month. A reduced speed of 55 mph on I-70 will be in place and enforced for the duration of Revive I-70 work. It is important for drivers to avoid distractions and observe the posted speed limit.
Overhead Sign Work
Crews are expected to move to the westbound lanes of I-70 the week of Feb. 24 to complete overhead sign work. Large, overhead signs are being relocated to prepare for construction.
The following closures are expected overnight on Monday, Feb. 24:
- One to two short (20-minute) rolling slowdowns (1 a.m. to 5 a.m.)
- Ramp from westbound I-70 to northbound U.S. 35, Exit 149B (8 p.m. to 7 a.m.)
- Outside lane of eastbound I-70 closed (8 p.m. to 6 a.m.)
For the remainder of next week, crews will install temporary signage under the following restrictions:
- Daytime shoulder closures (9 a.m. to 4 p.m.)
Anticipated schedules are subject to change based on weather and other factors.
